use a live bait like chubs or small perch

Use Big Spoons (silver) or in line spinners with a small amount of bucktail trailing.

I’ve never fished in Minnesota but have in Canada and used various lures to good effect. In England we use small fish baits for pike because our rivers are no much good for lure fishing.

Since using a gun or club is not allowed,

For smaller sized Pike you might want to try the “red & silver” and the yellow “five-of-diamonds” DareDevils. Pike also hit jigs, Rapalas and Thundersticks.

For larger, you will want to stick with chubs & suckers although I am a bit of a purist and don’t like that “trash” fish can overwhelm a sport fish population.

Good Luck!

Pike and bass commonly inhabit the same types of structure. Use spinner baits along weed lines.Plastic worms work well in most places like weed beds and Lily pads. Hook them weedless and drag them over the pads and let if drop in between them. Use a bullet shaped sinker that’s pegged to the line to make it sink deep into the cover.
Casting crank baits and worms along docks and beside the boats there will flush out the bass.
Pike like spinner baits and crank baits as well.

I love using rubber worms and throw out your line and let is sink and jerk it along the bottom…around the shoreline, weed, rocks. I hook the worm in the middle …call it wacky worm lol.

Well there is no bad way to fish northern pike, what I mean is that northern pike are like trashcans of the fresh water like some sharks are of the saltwaters, you just don’t know what you will find inside them once you cut them open. I heard people say they caught pike with bait fish 2/3 the lenght of their body in them. Here is one way to fish’em from the boat. Make your cast using a spinner or crank bait cranking it back towards you and at times you can actually watch the pike follow the bait… ooh i’ll tell you it can make the hair on the back of your neck stand-up and if this is what might just happen to you, you can then make a figure eight with the bait still in the water and sometimes this will cause the pike to strike the bait. Man let me just say it will take ten years off your life. The old sayin!
(a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work any day).

For the pike, i would use leeches, daredevles, swimbaits, and swimming jigs. For the bass, i would use earthworms, texas rigged worms, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits.

I like to use a white or chartruse single colorado spinner bait, depending on water clarity. Trim the skirt just behind the hook and then add a 3″ mr twister grub foradded action

Northern Pike = Spoons (Little Cleo), DarDevil (Yellow w/ red diamonds) or Red/White). White Spinners, Jigs with large fatheads or golden roaches (shiners), crankbaits, jerkbaits (rapala), Suicks, and bulldawgs (Muskie Lures).

Bass = Minnows, Worms, Crankbaits, Rattle Traps, Spinners, plastics crawlers/crayfish/frogs.

David B gave you probably the best answer the pike will take almost anything moving and a bass will also take a spinner bait. good luck and have fun.
